About the Podcast

The Folklore Podcast began in the summer of 2016, after it became apparent that there were very few podcasts which dealt with folklore in an accessible and yet informative way. Most were of the storytelling, 'campfire' variety. The ethos of this podcast is simple. To bring world-class experts in the fields of folklore and its associated areas of interest to a wide audience, completely free of charge. We do not run adverts or sponsorship on the podcast and as such, we are able to focus solely on the topic being examined. Of course, running a show like this does incur expenses and we rely on our supporters and donors to keep going, so if you can help, please do.

The podcast has grown significantly since it started, with over 1.25 million downloads of episodes and the addition of other projects. Episodes are now interspersed with our book strand, The Folklore Podcast Book Club, which looks at books with a folklore theme and chats to authors. These shows are now run as part of our new major research project, The Folklore Library and Archive. We also host Book Reviews on this site.

He is a committee member of the Folklore Society, which is the longest standing learned society for the study of Folklore. He tutors the online course 'An Introduction to British Folklore' for Learn for Pleasure and is also the curator of The Folklore Library and Archive.

It is through Mark's work in these areas of Folklore research that he is able to access and invite the calibre of guests which makes The Folklore Podcast such a rich and varied place to learn and enjoy about Folklore themes.
