Theodora Corvus’s father wanted the world for her. Not content for her to simply be the wife of some cruel lord, or a governess, he promised her a life of grand adventure. Unfortunately, he died. Now, Theodora has found posting as a governess at Broken Oak Manor in the distant north, leaving behind Woodrow Manor and her ailing grandmother. Little does she know what the world has in store for her - maybe adventure, after all?

L.V. Russell has turned her pen to Gothic Romance with The Quiet Stillness of Empty Houses (Quill & Crow, 2023). Author of The Wicked Wood Chronicles, Russell’s love of the Gothic genre and attraction to the wilderness shines through in her prose. This book will transport all readers to the dark countryside with whispers of Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre in the back of their mind.

Surprisingly, Theodora Corvus enjoys being a governess to the bright and curious Ottolina Thorne. She sees Ottolina as someone whom she can nurture, and as curious and perceptive as the girl is, that should not be too difficult a task. Broken Oak Manor has its secrets, though - secrets that threaten to shake the very foundation of this mysterious home. Cassias Thorne, the seldom-seen Lord of the Manor is just one of them. And Ms. Rivers, the only other member of the staff of the house, isn’t talking.

Russell allows the mystery to simmer. As Theodora’s magpie-like curiosity leads her to explore the grounds, the reader will be itching for answers. Answers do come, but they aren’t what the reader might first expect. The book blossoms with romance, and frightens with strange knocks in the night. Will Theodora escape the clutches of Broken Oak Manor? What else does fate have in store for her?

This book is perfect for fans of Jane Eyre and the Gothic Romance genre. If the brilliant cover and title don’t strike you enough, the contents of it certainly will. Like muddy, wet footprints on a hardwood floor, it will stick in your mind until the final page is turned. Just heed Ms. River’s warning and don’t go in the attic, you might not like what you discover there…
