CEALLAIGH MACCATH-MORAN

Ceallaigh S. MacCath-Moran is a PhD candidate in the Folklore Department at Memorial University of Newfoundland, an author, a poet, and a musician. Ceallaigh's research interests include animal rights activism as a public performance of ethical belief, which is the topic of her dissertation, and the creative applications of folklore for storytellers, which is the topic of her long-running Folklore and Fiction podcast and dispatch newsletter.

In Folklore and Fiction, she unpacks principles of folkloristic scholarship like genre, traditional tale plots and traditional motifs, then explains them, offers examples of them, and shows storytellers how to use them in their own work. She has been writing professionally since 2004, and placed over 50 academic articles, conference presentations, poems, and short stories since then.

Work from Ceallaigh's two fiction and poetry collections has been shortlisted for the Washington Science Fiction Association Small Press Award, nominated for the Pushcart Prize, and nominated for the Rhysling Award. Ceallaigh is an active member of these organizations, among others: American Folklore Society, International Society for Folk Narrative Research, Canadian Authors Association, Writers' Union of Canada and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association.

She is the creator of the audio drama The Belt and the Necklace as part of the Odyssey Theatre’s Other Path radio play
podcast series. Her upcoming book, The Storytellers Guide to Folklore is scheduled for release in late 2023.
