Online talk presented by author Dr Maria DeBlassie, followed by a Q&A with the audience.
This talk will explore the horrifying and wondrous archetype of the Christmas witch across a variety of cultures. She had many sides, from the benevolent gift-bringer to the malevolent terrorize of naughty children. Much like the duality of Santa Clause/Krampus, the yule witch is both wicked fairytale villain and fairy godmother. We'll explore this figure's pre-Christian origins and modern incarnations to understand how she is emblematic of our fascination with the witch in both yule traditions and popular culture more generally.
